Fatal weekend in Bath Beach

This Memorial Day weekend was a deadly one in Bath Beach, with a cyclist and pedestrian fatally struck and another cyclist seriously injured.

The first fatality took place just after midnight on Sunday, May 26. A 53-year-old man was walking in the westbound lane of the Belt Parkway, for reasons unknown, and was fatally struck. The driver remained on the scene and no charges were filed.

On Monday, May 27 at 12:04 p.m., a 74-year-old Asian man, Mai Zhang, was fatally struck while riding his bicycle at Benson Avenue and Bay 26th Street. He lived just a block away. That driver also remained on the scene and no charges were filed.

Hours later, an Asian delivery man riding his moped was hit from behind by a black Lexus at the intersection of Bath Avenue and Bay 14th Street. At first, the driver fled the scene, but he was later apprehended by police and arrested. The victim remains in serious condition at Lutheran Medical Center, according to a police source.
