NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week’s unsung hero is June Johnson, an active member of Community Board 10 and a leader within her 76th Street Block Association (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues).

June has spent decades in service to Bay Ridge. She served as a staff member for Councilmember Sal Albanese, where she assisted residents with quality-of -life issues.

She was employed by the Board of Education for over 20 years. My niece, Gillian, who worked with her at Shallow Junior High School, would comment on what a warm and generous person she is. June is currently making a difference in the lives of special education children as she volunteers her time and energy to help them at P.S. 180.

I do not know how she finds the time to do all that she does, because she is very active in community concerns through her work with Community Board 10. I wish her continued good health as she continues to do her work behind the scenes in Bay Ridge.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Coffee

The University of California conducted an experiment in which seniors who drank a 12-ounce mug of regular coffee performed significantly better than those who drank decaffeinated coffee.

The tests were repeated later in the day, and those who drank the regular coffee did just as well as when they drank it in the morning. However those who drank the decaffeinated had declined significantly in their testing ability. Researchers say that the experiment proved that caffeine can boost memory.

Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
