Sing as if no one can hear you at the Sound of Music sing-a-long

Everybody who attends will get a bag of props so you too can be a part of the show.

This May, Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts will present “Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music” at Walt Whitman Theater on the Brooklyn College campus, produced by Ben Freedman, who started doing this 13 years ago in London.

“The Sound of Music,” an Academy Award-winning movie musical based on the stage play by Rodgers and Hammerstein, is a classic you cannot miss, and on May 19, the film will be screened with lyrics and subtitles so that the audience can be incorporated into the fun.

“At the moment when so many things are miserable, it’ll be an opportunity to cheer you up,” said Freedman.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up. Freedman commented that members of the audience, which is mostly composed of women, commonly show up as nuns.

“This is the female equivalent of the Super Bowl,” Freedman laughed.

The host will lead the audience through a vocal warm-up and teach the group various activities that will unfold at certain moments of the show, the producer explained. For example, a piece of curtain is given out in the bag of props to be used at the designated moment in the show when the children are dressed up in clothes made from the estate’s drapes.

“It’s a fun and shared experience [for all of those people] who have grown up with the movie,” the producer said, adding that it gives the audience much pleasure to see the revival of the film.

The unusual experience hasn’t been brought to New York in quite some time, Freedman concluded. Commonly, groups of four or five and up to 20 women attend together and are absorbed in the phenomenon, he said.
