Tenth frame approaching for Maple Lanes

Sorry, bowlers, Maple Lanes will not be spared.

The legendary bowling alley will close its doors for good on Sunday, June 2 at the end of the business day, this paper has learned. Leagues will finish up their games on Friday, May 31 and the alley will remain open throughout the weekend.

Maple Lanes, which opened in 1964, will be razed to make way for housing and a house of worship. The LaSpina family, which owns the alley, announced back in September that they were selling the site to developer Fairmont Lanes, which will reportedly build 112 units of market-rate housing.

Hearings were held by the borough president and Department of City Planning to approve the re-zoning of the site. It was all approved, to the dismay of residents.

“Shell Lanes is the only real bowling alley [in the area] left now,” commented avid Maple Lanes customer Christina Squitieri, who even started a “Save Maple Lanes” petition which collected over 700 signatures.

Once Maple Lanes is gone, there will only be five bowling alleys left in Brooklyn: Brooklyn Bowl and The Gutter in Williamsburg, Melody Lanes in Sunset Park, Shell Lanes in Gravesend, and Strike 10 Lanes (fka Gil Hodges Lanes) in Mill Basin.
