Weekend of open studio tours in Red Hook, Carroll Gardens and Bushwick

‘Tis the season for open studio art tours! This weekend sees the return of two annual open studio events in Brooklyn, bringing art lovers and art-curious to Bushwick, Red Hook, and Carroll Gardens.

First up is the 7th annual Bushwick Open Studios (BOS) event, which starts on Friday, May 31 and runs through Sunday, June 2. The three-day arts and culture festival celebrates the community’s burgeoning and diverse arts scene by seeking to foster more conversations and collaboration between artists and residents. A FREE event, BOS is hosted by Arts in Bushwick and features organized events in addition to open studio meetups. There is a music festival, music showcase, youth-painted community mural launch at La Marqueta in Williamsburg, Community Day at Maria Hernandez Park, Music Series, and even a Cinema Sunday!

Then, in South Brooklyn, from Saturday to Sunday, June 1-2, comes the 5th Annual Red Hook & Carroll Gardens Artist Open Studio Tours, which focuses on the traditional open studio format while also serving as a community-wide fundraiser to introduce visitors to neighborhood businesses and causes.

From Noon to 6 p.m. on each day, art tour participants can visit art at their own pace, using a handy map to explore the works on display in studios, galleries, and businesses throughout the neighborhoods. Participating businesses include Ralf Graebner Photography, Brooklyn Collective, CLAYWORKS, Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, Brooklyn Farmacy, Giardini Pizza, BWAC Gallery, Red Hook Lobster Pound, Dry Dock Wine & Spirits, The 14th Door, and many more.

The tour is organized by Brooklyn Studio Tours and is an opportunity to get a taste of both the culture and the flavors of neighborhoods in historic South Brooklyn.

An added bonus is the fact that the tour is a fundraiser — participants are encouraged to donate to two community causes: Pietro’s Fight and Restore Red Hook. Pietro’s Fight focuses on saving the lives of boys affected with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, while Restore Red Hook was formed after Hurricane Sandy in order to raise funds to help the area’s small businesses get back on their feet.
