Larry Morrish’s UNSUNG BAY RIDGE: A lifetime of service

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

It is said that behind every great man is a good woman. That is certainly the case with this week’s unsung heroes: Tony and Diane Napoli. This dynamic duo has been serving our community since they were teenagers. I met them as BRAVO Ambulance volunteers when they were both teens and spending their time saving lives as many their age were involved in other activities. The great news is that they are still BRAVO volunteers thirty years later, with energy and love for service that have inspired all who know them. It is no surprise that their children also became BRAVO volunteers, due to the example set by their parents. Diane is a public school teacher and Tony, a Fire Department chief. I am amazed every time I see them at our parades and festivals, still donating their time and energy to Bay Ridge while taking care of all their other duties. They are indeed two unsung heroes who need to be acknowledged.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Congratulations to Joanne Seminara who was recently honored for excellent service during her three years as Chairperson of Community Board 10. During her tenure, Joanne spearheaded many successful projects, and representatives from a grateful community met to thank her for her dedication and service.

Many thanks to Reverend Khader El-Yateem and Douglas Jablon for hosting a great breakfast under the umbrella of the Unity Task Force. Representatives from all segments of the community came together on June 17, in the spirit of peace and harmony to acknowledge the work of Rabbi Dina Rosenberg. Rabbi Rosenberg is the spiritual leader of the Bay Ridge Jewish Center.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Acid Reflux

It may seem crazy to treat a disease that burns the throat and stomach with something that seems acidic. However, this folk remedy has worked for decades to those who report that they were frustrated with their lack of progress using traditional medicines. Apple Cider Vinegar to the rescue. Take one tablespoon in a glass of water. Add honey to taste and drink alone or with meals. If you like the taste of ginger, boil some grated ginger in water and add brown sugar or honey. Add one tablespoon apple cider vinegar for a delicious drink that is healthy as well as healing to the stomach.

Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
