Award-winning Brooklyn playwright premieres “Rubber Ducks and Sunsets”

Come out to see Williamsburg’s own playwright, Catya McMullen’s “Rubber Ducks and Sunsets,” a heartwarming and humorous play not only about friends coming together but to also celebrate the lives of those they lost, from July 12 through 27.

The native New Yorker recently won the 2012 Samuel French OOB Short Play Festival for her play “Missed Connection”.

On her blog McMullen attributes her success to the support of her family, “When I told my dad I wanted to write plays for a ‘living’ he told me the only thing that would disappoint him is if I told him I wanted to be an investment banker. They’re the best and support my work and come to everything.”

She currently has four full length plays, numerous shorts and has developed work with Ugly Rhino, The Middle Voice Theater Company and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s (UNC-CH) Department of Dramatic Art.  As if that was not enough to be proud of, McMullen graduated from UNC-CH in 2011 with Honors and received both the Max Steele Senior Prize in Fiction and the Suzanne Bolch Literary Award.

“Rubber Ducks and Sunsets” not only has an all-star cast but an award-winning design team, such as New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Award Winner David Sexton on Lighting Design and NYIT Award nominee Travis McHale on Set Design. The world premiere event kicks off on with a preview on July 12 at the Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street, and opening day is the 15.

“Rubber Ducks and Sunsets” is presented by Ground UP Productions and directed by Kate Middleton, the Artistic Director of the company.

“I am incredibly grateful to have a company that has invested in me the way they have,” McMullen stated about Ground UP.

The show runs Mondays and Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7pm with Saturday and Sunday performances at 2pm. Students and seniors can purchase tickets for $25 and $18 respectively at http://www.GroundUPProductions.org or by calling 800-838-3006. Opening night tickets are $55 and include a post-show party as well.
