Brooklyn Education: Bishop Ford honors scholar athletes

At the end of the school year, two student athletes from the Class of 2013 were honored at Bishop Ford High School. Rockaway resident Devin Rocks received the male Student Athlete Award. He also received theExcellence in Social Studies and Excellence in Math Awards.Devin earned a full scholarship to Fordham University, where he will be running track.

Jill Conroy of Windsor Terrace was named the female Student Athlete and also received the Congressional Recognition Award. Jill earned a full scholarship to Holy Family University, where she will be playing basketball.

At Bishop Kearney High School‘s annual Senior Awards Night in May, many members of the graduating class were honored. This year, the Lay Faculty Association of Bishop Kearney High School presented its annual award for scholarship, leadership and service to Marykate Huwer. Marykate is the daughter of Ms. Mary Farrell of Marine Park.

Congratulations to the John Dewey High School Robotics Team.

The team built a robot to throw out the first pitch at the Brooklyn Cyclones Game on June 20.

St. Saviour High School senior Lauren Dorvil has been accepted into SHIP (Summer Health Internship Program), which is offered through the Brooklyn Queens Long Island Area Health Education Center.

Lauren will be working at MaimonidesHospital three days per week. One day each week, she will go to Long Island University to interact with other students, meet health professionals, and learn about various medical fields. SHIP is a volunteer internship that runs from July 1 through August 8.

This year’s recipient of the Lorraine Buckley Scholarship at St. Edmund Preparatory High School is Alyssa Siriano from Our Lady of Grace Elementary School. Alyssa’s scholarship was presented to her during an Incoming Freshman Brunch at St. Edmund.

This scholarship was established by Mr. Charles Buckley in memory of his wife, Lorraine, who was a long-time faculty member at Our Lady of Grace. Their son, Gerard, taught at St. Edmund Preparatory High School for many years. Congratulations, Alyssa!

The Fine Arts Festival that recently took place at St. Edmund Preparatory High School involved over 150 students. Students who are members of the Badinage Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Ensembles, or the Beginners’ Band participated in the event.

The program consisted of concert marches, contemporary works, rock pieces and classical works from popular cartoons as well as other concert favorites. All band performances were under the direction of John Malazzo. Those people who donated instruments were acknowledged at the event.

In addition to the bands, the Dance Ensembles performed under the direction of Ms. Lemmon. Members of the International Baccalaureate Art Program, moderated by Mr. Fama, and the Photography Club, moderated by Ms. Joan Kowkabany, also exhibited their work.
