Take a walk down memory lane in Beverly Trimming Shop

Step into Beverly Trimming Shop and you will be instantly transported to another time in history.

The Fifth Avenue business is packed to the gills with yards of colorful yarn, different hued tulle, assorted printed fabric, threads, dress trimming, trimming for furniture, buttons of all shapes and sizes, notions like hooks, snaps and embellishments, and 20 different types of zippers. It carries anything needed for knitting, including hard-to-find knitting needles.

But don’t be overwhelmed by the beautiful and eclectic inventory: there is a friendly staff who will assist you with anything you need with a smile.

“I pride myself in keeping the nostalgia,” said owner Rosemarie Fistanic, who has run the business for the past nine years. “We have modern things, but I really go into vintage.”

Fistanic believes that the shop originated on Beverly Road in Flatbush nearly a century ago, judging by some of the buttons she has. Forty years ago, it relocated to Bay Ridge.

The shop still has the original sturdy wood shelving and ladders, giving it an authentic and somewhat romantic vibe.

“There are not that many stores like this anymore,” Fistanic said. “People come in and just stand there, almost ready to cry. They say, ‘I used to come here with my mom 40 years ago.’”

Fistanic, who came to the states 60 years ago from Bavaria, Germany, said it also gives the neighborhood’s diverse community a little slice of home overseas.

“Newcomers, as well as visitors from other countries, come in saying that it looks like a store back home,” she said. “That’s what really keeps me going – the nostalgia.”

Beverly Trimming Shop can also take orders for large quantities of any items. In addition, if a customer wants something that is not in stock, it can be ordered and shipped within days.
