Unsung Bay Ridge: Bravo to Jimmy

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

James (Jimmy) Nealon has been involved in public service for most of his life. As a 17-year-old student at Xaverian High School, he joined BRAVO as a volunteer and continued to save lives in our community for the next 20years.

During this period, he taught free CPR courses to the public and extended his range of service by studying to become a New York City EMS paramedic. Jimmy wanted to make service his life’s work, so he continued to study medicine and is now a physician’s assistant at Lutheran Medical Center.

In spite of his busy career, Jimmy continues to run errands for his neighbors and does whatever he can to help within the community. He is a wonderful son to his parents and I join in their pride because I have seen him grow up living a life of community service.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The second Third Avenue Stroll was a resounding success, attracting thousands to our neighborhood and businesses. Do not miss our next Stroll which will be held on Friday, August 9 from 69th to 80th Street. This is a win-win event that is welcomed by merchants and patrons alike.

I am looking forward to the upcoming 20th Anniversary Pioneers Dinner, where I will share the award for community service with two very good longtime friends: Douglas Jablon, vice president of Maimonides Medical Center and Miles Davis, vice president of Lutheran Medical Center.

We have worked together for over 35 years on community and health issues. Stay tuned for updates on the Pioneers anniversary celebration.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES:

Stomach Bug — Many people across the United States are coming down with a stomach bug which lasts one day for many, but longer for others.

Here are some recommended folk remedies. Try extra strong black tea sweetened with honey and a slice of ginger for the nausea and vomiting that accompanies the stomach bug.

Activated charcoal is also highly recommended as a folk remedy for nausea and vomiting. Two capsules opened and mixed in a glass of juice has brought relief from stomach upset as well as chemotherapy nausea.

Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
