Deputy Inspector Jeffrey Schiff says goodbye to the 76th Precinct

A year and a half after joining the 76th Precinct as commanding officer, Deputy Inspector Jeffrey Schiff will be leaving Carroll Gardens and Red Hook for a new post at the 106th Precinct in Howard Beach and Ozone Park, Queens. His transfer was made effective as of midnight Wednesday/Thursday, September 25-26.

He will be replaced by Captain Justin Lenz, who will greet residents at the next 76th Precinct Community Council meeting on Tuesday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the PAL Miccio Center at 110 West 9th Street.

Schiff made the announcement in an email to neighbors and colleagues, stating that his time at the 76th Precinct “Was a wonderful and exciting experience for me [and] one that I shall never forget.”

One of the accomplishments and community collaborations that he said he will most remember is “the fact that the 76th Precinct was able to help the community endure and to help rebuild after Hurricane Sandy by working with the various grass root organizations that sprung up out of good will and hard work.  This unprecedented and rarely seen union between the police and various local community groups showed the rest of the city a successful example of how this type of partnership can be productively achieved.  Further, it showed just how resilient our community really is and that during the course of any crisis we proved we are one people.”

He also cited police-community collaboration as instrumental to the precinct’s approach towards tackling “the Red Hook Housing Development Drug Gang Wars during the months from March to July 2012 and the subsequent Robbery epidemic experienced in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill that soon followed in August and September 2012.”

Schiff came to the 76th Precinct in April 2012, taking the reins from Captain John Lewis, who had been transferred to the 71st Precinct in Crown Heights.

Schiff previously served as executive officer at the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, and executive officer at the 67th Precinct in East Flatbush.
