Generally Speaking: FHHS’s Bernard King enters National Basketball Hall of Fame

Brooklyn native Bernard KingDuring his basketball career, four-time NBA all-star King played for the New Jersey Nets, the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks and the Washington Bullets.He is the first athlete of avarsity sport at Fort Hamilton to become an inductee into aprofessional sports national hall of fame.

The Bay Ridge AARP is getting ready to launch its 29th yearof volunteer service and programs whenit holds its first meeting on Tuesday afternoon, September 17, at 2:30 p.m. in the Shore Hill NeighborhoodCenter on 91st Street between Shore Road and Colonial Road.Due to the primary election, the group had to reschedule its first meeting a week later.

Guest speakers are Patrick GilbrideKaren TadrossLes Miserables.

This past week, the Bay Ridge AARP helped promote a visit by the AARP/Walgreen’s Wellness Tour Bus, to the Walgreen’s parking lot, at 95th Street and Third Avenue.Wellness staffers aboard the specially-equipped bus offered free health tests which included cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body fat percentages, body mass index, skeletal muscle, resting metabolism and weight assessment.

The free testing, we were advised, was worth over $100. In addition, participants age 50 and older were offered free AARP memberships or an additional year gratis if they were already a member.

As a member of the Fort Hamilton Citizens Action Committee, we were able to join FHCAC President Bill GuarinelloBob RoseWhile there, we learned in order for the museum which is housed in the old Caponier, to become fully waterproof, and still comply with the requirements for listing on the National Register of Historic Places,the earth and grass which were on top of the roof had to be removed and then returned, no small task!

With Colonel Eluyn GinesHector Prince on his right, museum curator and director Richard Cox cut the reopening ribbon.

Amongthe VIPs in attendance were City Councilmember Vincent GentileMarty GoldenAlec Brook-KrasnyVincent Del Giudice and John Ingram.

Ingram is a past deputy commander of the New York State Naval Militia. The invocation was delivered by Base Chaplain Major Jamison Bowman and the program was emceed by David Linder.

Matthew Scarpa, the newly elected second vice president of the Bay Ridge Historical Society, is holding a book signing for his new book, titledBay Ridgeat the Bookmark Shoppe8415 Third Avenue on Saturday, September 14, starting at 6 p.m.The tome is an interestingcollection of vintage postcards which have never been published before.

The Kings County Chapter of the Catholic War Veterans held its third annual dinner at the Polonaise Terrace catering hall in Greenpoint.This year’s theme was a tribute to American Revolutionary General Tadeusz Kosciuszko and to Polish soldiers for their contributions to western civilization.
