Unsung Bay Ridge: There’s something about Mary

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week I’d like to spotlight the efforts of our neighbor, Mary Lawlor. Throughout the years I have known Mary to be a warm and dedicated person, helping those in need every day.

She is an active volunteer for Our Lady of Angels Parish, serving on numerous committees, providing services for the needy. She is a leader of our block association, helping to keep the block clean and assisting those who need her help.

Mary is a charter member of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Parade, and works tirelessly in promoting the longevity of her Irish culture. She is also a businesswoman who works at her family-owned Irish Haven Pub in Sunset Park. Mary is always cheerful with great energy and a warm smile, a blessing indeed to our community.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Sinus Congestion/Infection

A folk remedy that has been highly recommended for sinus congestion or infection is to peel an onion and cut into fours or eights and then pull the layered pieces apart. Pour honey over the top of the onion pieces, and let it steep for a few hours or overnight.

The honey pulls the liquid out of the onion and this liquid is also used for relieving chest congestion, colds or minor respiratory congestion. Eat one chunk of onion whenever you feel sinus pressure and cover the rest to use when the sensation returns. Refrigerate and use until the pressure is gone.

Please consult your doctor if you are ill or on any medication.
