Unsung Bay Ridge: Uff-da!

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week, I’d like to recognize the contributions of John Nerstenth Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues for decades. Many of our Norwegian youngsters may not know of John’s crucial role in keeping the Norwegian culture, pride and parade going for decades in Bay Ridge.

John’s block was home to a large Norwegian population, and he was a leader who inspired patriotism, encouraged most homes on his block to fly the American flag, and spearheaded one of the best block parties every year.

John’s influence went beyond his block to being a part of several clean-up campaigns throughout Bay Ridge. Today, health issues have slowed John down, but along with his wife Barbara, he visits Fifth Avenue regularly to keep an eye on how things are going in the neighborhood.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Your Pets – Skin Irritations and Allergies.

Your cat or dog might be suffering from allergies if she bites, scratches and develops skin rashes. First, try changing her food. If that does not work, some pet owners have tried apple cider vinegar on cotton balls applied to the spot several times per day. Others have reported success with one or half (depending on weight) teaspoon coconut oil added to meals.

Please consult your doctor if you are ill or on any medication.
