McCarren to get its own outdoor ice rink in November 15

Autumn saw the McCarren Park Pool close for the season, but winter will see it reopen again–as an outdoor ice skating rink.

The 7,200-square-foot winter wonderland will open on Friday, November 15, and operate through early January 2014, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Entry will be $4 for children and $8 for adults, with a $5 skate rental fee. Any profits will go towards improving and maintaining parks in northern Brooklyn. Over 300 skaters can be accommodated on the natural ice rink.

“We’re in an ice-rink desert here,” said Ed Janoff, executive director of the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), to The New York Times. It will be “a winter destination and holiday tradition for New Yorkers and visitors alike.”

OSA and the city Department of Parks and Recreation are working together to operate the new rink.

In addition to ice skating, there will also be regular classes and workshops in hockey, figure skating, and even curling, courtesy of the city Parks Department. Food concessions will be provided via Anella, Jimmy’s Diner, and No. 7 Sub. And there will even be a weekend holiday market between Thanksgiving weekend and Christmas.
