Oh Orly: Career choices

My wife wants me to change careers because I have been out of work for some time but I really enjoy the line of work I am already in – what do you think I should do?

Dear Mark,

If you’ve been out of work for a while, maybe you need to look for something else in another field temporarily. I understand you enjoy the line of work you’re in. However, if it’s not currently providing for you and your family, you need to alleviate the financial burden.

Maybe your line of work is not the hottest thing on the market at this time. Possibly for every opening in your line of work there are another 500 people applying for it. So it’s best just to take something temporarily for now.

You should continue to follow your dream by applying for jobs in your field of interest until you get what you want. It has been proven that you are more apt to find a job while you have a job. The reason behind this is that the financial burden is not making you desperate or anxious or negative.

I’m not talking about what you say; it’s how you behave. Don’t give up! Things tend to always work out.
