Unsung Bay Ridge: Glorious activism

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week’s good neighbor and unsung hero is Gloria MelnickShe was past president of the Bay Ridge Community Council, and also served as executive secretary. She is a current member of the Board of Directors and is very active on the Halloween Art Contest committee. Gloria was past president of the Ragamuffin Children’s Parade and the Bay Ridge Women’s Club.

Throughout the years that I have known Gloria, she has kept a low profile while being actively involved in many projects behind the scenes. She is a retired teacher with the Board of Education, and is very involved in the well-being of her neighbors.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Baking soda for canker sores

If you develop a canker sore on the side of your tongue or your inner lip, it can be very painful. A folk remedy that works to ease the discomfort is to mix one teaspoon of baking soda and one teaspoon of water, mixed into a paste.

Place on the sore and leave for a a minute or two. Spit out and swish with water. Initially, it may sting, but the baking soda will take away the pain. An alternative is to mix the solution as a gargle and hold in the mouth for a minute or two.

Please consult your doctor if you are ill or on any medication.
