Bells were ringing merrily as the Salvation Army of Bay Ridge kicked off its annual Kettle Campaign on a cold Wednesday afternoon outside Century 21 at Fifth Avenue and 86th Street on November 13.
Pedestrians were welcomed to performances by the Xaverian High School Select Band led by teacher Joseph Loposky. The group played holiday songs to get Bay Ridge residents in the giving spirit and spread awareness for the organization. In between performances, Lieutenant Joel Ashcroft of the Salvation Army of Greater New York, who moved to Bay Ridge with his wife Lieutenant Kathleen this past summer, stressed the great needs of the community.Today were asking for your help to support the work that goes on at the Salvation Army. Were collecting toys and presents for the kids who cannot afford to get it for themselves. Were collecting food for those who cannot afford to feed themselves. Were collecting clothing for those who cant afford to clothe themselves, said Ashcroft.Volunteers, who also sang throughout the event, are excited to help out during another holiday season. It means everything. I volunteer every year and I get so much joy out of it. The Salvation Army doesnt get enough recognition. Theyre the first to respond when tragedies happen, said Margaret Ryan, who is in her fifth year of volunteering.Throughout the holiday season at Salvation Army, we try to raise as much funds as we can, Ashcroft added. The Xaverian contingent, who took time out of their school day, was honored to help out any way they could. Its special for the boys. Xaverian is always trying to give back to the community. Were trying to spread joy at a time like this through music, Loposky said. All the funds raised will go to the Bay Ridge through Coney Island area. All the money raised will support your neighbors and the kids in this area, said Ashcroft. Those who wish to donate to the community through the Salvation Army can do so at the following locations: Pathmark in Coney Island, Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue on Saturdays, Food Town at 91st Street and Third Avenue, Century 21 on 86th St and 87th Streets between Fifth and Fourth Avenues, Met Foods at 79th Street and Third Avenue, and Walgreens on Third Avenue and 95th Street.
