Man rescued from Verrazano Bridge after threatening to jump

At 10:09 a.m. on Monday, November 11, police were called in to respond to a possible suicide attempt on upper level of the Verrazano Bridge, where a man stopped his Dodge Caravan in the Brooklyn-bound lanes, left his the hazard lights on, and climbed out onto the outer cables of the bridge.

Detective Jeffrey Loughery, Detective Paul Fazio and Police Officer Robert Reed of Emergency Service Squad 5 responded, and wearing safety harnesses, approached the man.

When Reed engaged the man in conversation, he told him that he was unemployed and having a hard time providing financially for his family.

After Reed inched closer to the individual, who was on the ledge of the bridge with his hands on the cables, Loughery and Fazio reached out and grabbed the man, who was placed by them in a safety harness and removed from the outer cables, then brought by ambulance to Staten Island University North Hospital.
