The power of love makes itself felt

The power of love shone brightly at Bay Ridge bar The Hideout on October 16, as family and friends hosted “Cancer Can’t Kill Love,” a tribute to our own Home Reporter/Brooklyn Spectator reporter Meaghan McGoldrick’s mother Joanne, who lost her battle to leukemia on October 9.

McGoldrick was touched by the outpouring of support and the large reception for the all-day event. “The turnout left me speechless,” she said. “The love in the room was just so overwhelming.”

Part owner of The Hideout as well as longtime family friend and neighbor, Christopher Goerz echoed the sentiments. “It was fantastic,” he said. “It was a great success. The place was packed for her. There were so many friends that were there. It was a really good time.”

The cover charge for the event was $10 and proceeds went to help Meaghan meet various expenses as well as to the ‘Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk’ to a team already formed under Joanne’s name.

Because of the generosity of her friends and family, McGoldrick was both surprised and thrilled with the final tally. “We made way more than we ever expected to make and there were just so many people that not only loved me but really loved my mom,” she remarked. “It was like she was there.”

Throughout the day, local bands August on Sunday, Brian Sears’ Band and ROYGBIV performed. “The bands were incredible as always. I’m really proud to call those boys my friends,” added McGoldrick.

Gerald Sullivan of August of Sunday was more than happy to perform for the touching event. “I’ve known Meaghan for a long time. Anything I can do to help,” he said.

DJ Dare performed before the night finally came to a close.

The event spanned from 2-10 p.m. McGoldrick considered it a great day after a difficult loss. “I was overwhelmed by people’s generosity,” she said. “It was a great success.”
