After almost 20 years, local gem Jet Beauty remains strong

They’ve been beautifying Fifth Avenue for nearly two decades, and there’s no sign of them slowing down. Jet Beauty Supplies, a Bay Ridge staple for local residents as well as salon businesses, will celebrate 20 years in the neighborhood this June.

Owner Alex Kokozakis has had his finger on the pulse of the neighborhood practically his entire life. “I myself have lived here for 35 years. I went to school here and grew up in the neighborhood. I love Bay Ridge,” he said.

The feeling is mutual, as customers have responded to the stellar customer service the beauty store offers. “A lot of those loyal customers I’ve known over 20 years by name,” said Kokozakis. That comfort and special relationship between consumer and customer is part of what sets the establishment apart from its competitors. “There’s a long lasting relationship that we have with them.”

Over time, Kokozakis has expanded his business. Two years ago, he opened another store in Staten Island. “We also have a van that runs around Brooklyn and services over 400 salons now,” he said. “So the wholesale keeps us busy as well as the retail.”

Even with exceptional customer service, a store can only go as far as its products. Luckily for Jet Beauty, they have all those bases covered too. “We carry a lot of hard to find products.” Some of the big sellers include Moroccanoil products, The Balm, Archipelago Botanicals Sugar Body Lotion, hair color, straightening irons and Conair dryers.

Along with female beauty products, the store has also become a destination for men too. “What has gotten big lately here is men’s grooming as far as trimming sideburns, facial hair. We have all the razors. Half the customers are male,” said Kokozakis, who also mentioned that several barbershops buy their products at his store.

Jet Beauty is also active in the community. “We donate to most local schools. We give away baskets for their charity events,” he said.

The store’s prices remain affordable and offer various promotional offers through its official Facebook page. During the holiday season, they offered 15 percent off most products in the store just by mentioning the website offer.

Kokozakis, who was born into the business, remains thrilled to be a part of the Fifth Avenue BID. “It’s definitely the customers in the neighborhood that make it different from other areas,” he said
