Brooklyns burgeoning tech scene continues to grow, bringing jobs and higher wages to residents, according to a new report, IT Grows in Brooklyn, released on May 20 by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and CUNY Graduate Center. The report notes that from 2005-2012, there was a 44 percent increase in the number of tech companies in the borough and a 56 percent rise in employees, the majority of whom live in Brooklyn.
In addition, real annual wages for Brooklyn IT companies grew 32 percent while citywide wages remained stagnant over the same period. Brooklyns tech scene is centered in DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn and the area described as the Brooklyn Tech Triangle, as well as offshoots in Sunset Parks Industry City and parts of the Greenpoint-Williamsburg waterfront. Brooklyn is always on the cutting edge [and] we now need to work on spreading Brooklyn’s tech community across the borough, said Chamber President/CEO Carlo Scissura. [We must] find ways to connect Brooklyn’s next generation with the education, training and experience they will need to take advantage of the opportunities this growing sector brings.Leave a Reply
