PHOTOS: Celebrating a storied past and a promising future at Adelphi Academy

Old traditions were given new energy as Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn celebrated its 151st anniversary and honored a select group of local luminaries during a gala dinner held at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island.

The “little school of big dreams,” as it was called by Head of School Iphigenia Romanos, Adelphi has “prospered, she said, as it has worked “to help shape the fabric of the community” over the century and a half of its existence.

For this year’s gala, the school paid tribute to this paper’s Co-Publisher Victoria Schneps, who received the Charlotte Morrill Woman of the Year Award; Vicki Roitman, assistant executive director of the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island, who received the Dr. Charles H. Levermore Educator of the Year Award; the Russo family, proprietors of Gargiulo’s, who received the Community Treasure Award; and Marc and Sarah Herman, who were given the Spirit of Adelphi Award.

“One hundred and fifty one years – wow,” enthused Schneps when she received her award. “That speaks to the uniqueness of the school. I see a shining school on a hill in Adelphi Academy. So, shine on brightly forever.”
