Firehouse centennial marked at civic meeting

Marking the 100^th anniversary of Dyker Heights’ own Castle on the Hill firehouse, the Dyker Heights Civic Association (DHCA) made a special presentation to firefighters stationed there at the group’s June meeting.

“We’ve seen a lot of change in Dyker Heights but the building and the service they provide hasn’t changed,” noted Fran Vella-Marrone, DHCA’s president, adding, “When everyone else is running out, they are running in. It is really an honor for us to bestow this honor on you.”

The firehouse is home to two companies, Engine 284 and Ladder 149, and their members made a quick visit to St. Philip’s parish hall on Tuesday, June 10, when the presentation was made.

How quick was the visit? After a brief photo op, actually held before the meeting was called to order, the majority of firefighters present rushed out, called to a fire.

“We will try to do another 100 years of service, as best we can,” noted Firefighter Joe La Polla, one of a handful who were able to remain behind.
