Etiquette Boss: Playing their business cards right

BUSINESS CARDS AND COLLEGE GRADS: Thousands of college graduates are now interviewing for jobs, and in the process, will be receiving many business cards. I thought this would be a good time to remind them of  business card protocols.

A  business card is much more than a means of contact. It is also a brief record of what that individual has achieved thus far in life, and it should be acknowledged as such. Therefore, the first rule is to look at the card to see what information it holds about the individual.

Secondly, comment on something the card reveals, even if it is simply, “Nice card. Thank you.” Thirdly,  if you are seated at a desk or table when the card is presented, place the card on the table and retrieve it as you rise to leave.

Men should never place someone’s card in their back pocket and sit, even when the wallet is kept there. Some cards carry portraits, and many people find it offensive to see their image pushed under someone’s rear. Place it in your shirt or any other position above the waist. Ladies can place it in their pocketbook.

Any business card that is offered with both hands should be received with both hands. This is a sign of respect in many Eastern cultures. Lastly, when giving a card, position it with the writing turned toward the person. These are the little courtesies that mean a lot in business.

BEAUTY TIPS:   Stop Falling Hair

If your hair seems to be more in love with the sink than your head, it is time to do something about it. One of the best remedies for falling hair is onion juice. I know it sounds smelly, and it is, but it is very effective. It works.

The remedy is to grate or blend a purple onion, or a brown one if purple is not available. Strain the juice and rub it in your temples and on the scalp. (It did not burn me, but try a patch test before saturating your scalp) Place a plastic cap and leave for an hour or two before using a fragrant shampoo and conditioner. Three times per week is the recommended treatment. A combination of castor and almond oils massaged nightly into the scalp is also recommended for hair loss.
