Unsung Bay Ridge: Community causes on the menu

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCEOur unsung heroes

One of the special qualities about Bay Ridge as a community is the wide spread cooperation when it comes to raising funds for others in need.  Stephen Jackson, co-owner of the Yellow Hook Grille on Third Avenue, is one of our neighbors who quietly helps to organize such projects as he helps to raise funds for special causes.

He was born and raised in St. Ephrem’s parish, and went into community service as a police officer. Now retired from the NYPD, he nevertheless keeps busy as a coordinator for the Merchants of Third Avenue. He recently married his beautiful wife, Mary, and I wish them a long and happy life together.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES:   Bitter Melon

Bitter melon is one of the most potent folk remedies against diabetes. It reduces blood sugar as well as blood pressure while cleansing the blood. It is also used for treating psoriasis and a host of other skin diseases.

As a vegetable, bitter melon can be found in many Asian markets, but it is a taste one needs to acquire. However, an alternative would be to make tea with the leaves or pills that are sold in health food stores.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns,  or are on any medication.
