A View from the Cliff: “Oklahoma” is Okay! as NCT

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s exuberant celebration of Americana has made their beloved musical “Oklahoma!” a perennial favorite. This weekend is no exception. Just take a look at Narrows Community Theatre’s packed house at the Fort Hamilton Army Post Theater off Fort Hamilton Parkway and 101st Street.

Director Alex Acevedo, Music Director Katie Siegmund and choreographer Justin Bourdet use their extensive experience and outstanding talents to bring out unbridled energy and creativity in their cast.

Briefly, the storyline involves several Oklahoma settlers more than 100 years ago. Yes, American statehood is just around the corner. Before that achievement, they must first resolve the conflicts that interfere with their relationships and their livelihood. Along the way, the strength and optimism of our still young and magnificent nation is reaffirmed.

George Tsalikis is Curly McLain. He walks through the audience singing “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” as 10-foot-tall cornstalks are projected upstage. He is bold and brash with a well earned swagger. His affection is directed toward Emilyn Ryan Reed as Laurey. Ms. Reed’s wonderful voice is at its best in her duet with Curly—“People Will Say we’re in Love.”

Dawn Barry Hansen is Aunt Eller, the generally level-headed matriarch of the group. She joins them for lighthearted songs including “The Surrey with the Fringe on the Top,” and “(Everything’s up to date in) Kansas City.”

A truly intimidating performance by Stephen Foster Harris as sinister Jud Fry fits perfectly into this outstanding collection of actors. The dark storyline is tempered by well-played humorous relationships between Will Parker (Matt ZanFagna), Ado Annie (Sharon Lita), Ali Hakim (Jose Mendez) and Gertie (Sara Cappiello). The dream ballet in the first act is an extraordinarily polished effort as well.

The huge cast of singers, dancers, actors and musicians deserve hearty applause but are too numerous to name individually. The bright sets, colorful costumes and powerful special effects are also carefully executed by a first rate production staff. Bravo. Bravo.
