Unsung Bay Ridge: Multi-faceted volunteer

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCEOur unsung heroes

Our person of the week is Mary Quinones, a hard-working lady who has contributed to many worthy projects in our community. She is well known, but has not been recognized for all of her community work on behalf of the residents of Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

Mary volunteers a great deal of her time to the Guild For Exceptional Children and the Bay Ridge Community Council. She is a member of Community Board 10, and serves as vice president for community partnerships, Lutheran Medical Center.

In this capacity, she assists the families and friends of patients who are concerned about the welfare of their sick loved ones. Her hard work is supported by her husband, Lewis. Mary does most of her volunteering behind the scenes, but it is time for her work to be recognized.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Happy Thanksgiving greetings go out from my family to yours. My wife and I would also like to extend our prayers to military families everywhere, especially those from our area who are still in harm’s way.  At this time of giving thanks, we remember them and do not take their sacrifices for granted.

The Merchants of Third Avenue will be hosting their Annual Christmas Party on Monday, December 1, at 7 p.m. at Giacomo’s Restaurant, 7902 Third Avenue, and the price of admission is an unwrapped toy, which will be given to the children of service members on the Fort Hamilton Military Base.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES:   Pomegranate

The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology research team presented two studies at an international conference, that pomegranate oil triggered a self-destruct mechanism in 37 to 56 percent of  breast cancer cells which were treated for three days with the oil, depending on the amount used.

In a second study, normal and cancerous breast cells were exposed to pomegranate wine and pomegranate peel extract. While normal cells remained unaffected, 75 percent of the cancerous cells died. It has also been tested as a preventive measure against skin cancer by inducing topical cancers in mice.

One study that used the oil before exposing mice to cancer causing treatments also showed promising results. It would not hurt to apply this oil before going into the sun.   Pomegranate juice taken daily has many health benefits, including eliminating plaque in coronary arteries.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns,  or on any medication.
