St. Bernard Parish celebrates season with lights

Here comes Santa—on a vintage fire truck!

The St. Bernard of Clairvaux church celebrated the holiday season with lights, songs and Christmas treats at its East 69th Street location on December 8.

“Every year we have an annual lighting,” said Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, pastor at St. Bernard’s. “[We have] an outdoor light show and lighting of our outdoor Nativity and Christmas tree. We had about 500 people show up, the school children and our parish choir, and our school of religion children.”

Santa rolled in on a vintage fire truck to greet the children, take photos with them, and pass out candy canes.

The event also turned out Stephanie Hanvey, a local vocalist of “American Idol” fame, who sang “O Holy Night.”

“We served hot chocolate and doughnuts, all the kids got candy canes from Santa and it was just a nice wonderful evening,” added Gigantiello. “The kids had a great time and it was a nice way to get into the Christmas spirit in the parish.”
