What frigid weather? Despite the slush, Brooklynites were excited to celebrate the Year of the Goat as the borough was the place to be to celebrate this year’s Lunar New Year weekend.
On Sunday, February 22, hundreds attended the 28th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration Parade on Eighth Avenue, which was hosted by the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association (BCA).
Red and yellow balloons, fireworks and confetti filled the sky. Dragons danced in the streets as traditional Chinese songs were played throughout the afternoon. To make the day more festive, children also dressed up, performed and carried sparklers. Red banners were also on display for good fortune and envelopes filled with undisclosed amounts of money were distributed to the youngsters.
Despite recent record low temperatures and snow the day before, the parade enjoyed a rare mild winter day.
Elected officials such as Councilmember Carlos Menchaca, New York Senator Charles Schumer and Borough President Eric Adams attended the various activities.
According to the Chinese calendar, this marks the year 4713. According to tradition, those born during the Year of the Goat tend to be gentle, calm and timid.
