Cali coffee roasters ready for Brooklyn

A Brooklyn neighborhood will soon get a taste of the Golden State’s coffee when Blue Bottle – a coffee roaster and retail chain based out of Oakland, California – opens up shop in Park Slope.

With several locations in NYC like Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen, the “single-origin” distributor of coffee and coffee beans has been expanding on the East Coast and now, thanks to Sabre Real Estate Group, will have a 1,050 square foot space in Brooklyn.

“I think Brooklyn does not like to see a lot of the nationals come in, like Starbucks,” said Scott Sher, principal at Sabre Real Estate Group, of what makes the West Coast coffee roasters stand out. “[While] they are a national concept, they really fit more of that local Brooklyn feel.”

Weary of the “grande eggnog latte and the double skim pumpkin-pie macchiato,” according to its website, Blue Bottle’s founder, James Freeman, wanted to steer clear of the coffee chain stigma and “open a roaster for people who were clamoring for the actual taste of freshly roasted coffee.”

“I think it fits the community very well, the concept,” added Sher. “The landlord (Nicholas Estates Realty Corp.) was very specific about the type of tenant they wanted here. [Blue Bottle] is an established brand but they fit the Brooklyn model as far as tenants go. I think the community will be very pleased.”

The Seventh Avenue and Third Street storefront, formerly Ocean Fish Market, will be tailored to match the neighborhoods surroundings, according to Blue Bottle’s website. The Park Slope location will be equipped with a menu featuring soups, sandwiches, and salads along with 15 different types of coffee available in-house and packaged to purchase.
