Oscar night in Bay Ridge

Food and drink flowed freely at the Bay Ridge Manor on February 22 as residents cast ballots for their Oscar favorites and honored the long-time president of the Merchants of Third Avenue at an Academy Awards Night party.

Robert Howe, who has been president of the merchants group for over 20 years, received the Bay Ridge Lifetime Achievement Award at the party for his dedication to the small businesses that line Third Avenue.

“He’s always there for the community and recognition is long overdue,” community organizer Larry Morrish told The Home Reporter. “That’s our guy.”

Proceeds from the $100 per person dinner went toward renovations for the St. Nicholas Home on Ovington Avenue, a non-profit assisted living home for those 55 and older.

“The money will help renovate the entire home after 30 years,” Morrish said. “It’s a great charity to pick.”

“I’m happy that I was able to bring attention to St. Nicholas and all the work they do in the community,” Howe said.

The event, which drew a crowd of around 200 and raised a few thousand dollars for the St. Nicholas home, will return next year with the hope of benefitting the center.

“It’s a great place,” Morrish said. “That home is a community home and we have to take care of it.”
