Community education council honors art teachers in District 20

To promote and honor the hard work of South Brooklyn’s art teachers, the Community Education Council of District 20 held an awards dinner on February 26 in which all proceeds are earmarked for arts programs in local schools.

Many teachers from across the borough gathered at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island to eat, drink and receive recognition for their commitment to educating the next generation of Brooklyn artists.

Nicole Costanzo, an art teacher at P.S 682 in Bensonhurst, was one of the many honorees that received a certificate for their “dedicated service in the area of arts education to the children of District 20.”

“It was a beautiful event; all of the art was amazing,” she said.

Proceeds from the $80 per person cost of the dinner will go towards grants in District 20 schools that will fund art programs in Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Borough Park and Sunset Park.

All told, around 500 people attended the event, said Costanzo.

“It’s great to see that all the money is going back into the arts programs,” Costanzo said.
