Unsung Bay Ridge: Frankly generous

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCEOur unsung heroes

Our weekly “unsung hero” honor is shared by a husband and wife team, which has served our community well for decades. Frank and Laura Grassi have used their video production company to preserve our visual history, often without compensation.

I recently enjoyed looking at their coverage of the return of the USS Normandy from the Gulf War, when we accompanied families from Fort Hamilton to greet their loved ones. I am grateful for the archive of precious memories that they have preserved for future generations.

Frank was president of the 68th Precinct Community Council for many years, with Laura serving as treasurer. For years they drove the 68th Precinct community observation vehicle from which they reported anything on the streets that detracted from our quality of life.

Frank still volunteers at the St. John’s Senior Center on Fort Hamilton Parkway, and the two continue to make our community a better place in which to live.

COMMUNITY NEWS

It is that time of year again for State Senator Marty Golden’s very popular Easter Egg Hunt. The young and young-at-heart will all gather on Saturday, April 4,  at 79th Street and Shore Road, from 2 to 4 p.m. It is an event that provides refreshments, gifts  and an all-round good time.

Christians are encouraged to join the Good Friday procession, organized by the parishes of South Brooklyn, on Friday, April 3. The procession begins at 16th Avenue and 65th Street, and ends at St. Finbar’s Church, Benson Ave and Bay 20th Street.  This sacred event will help to prepare us for a joyful week.

UNSUNG HEALTH  REMEDIES:   Dogs

“Some of the most common symptoms you need to look for to determine if your dog has mange are hair loss, bald spots, sores, scabs and intense itching. You may also notice reddened skin and a rash or pattern of bumps on the animal’s skin,” reports Ted, from the Earth Clinic natural medicines website.

Hydrogen peroxide (one part 3% peroxide to two parts water), three tablespoons of borax, and water to mix the solution, is reportedly very effective. Do not dry the animal or rinse the solution. Check the website for additional information.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or are on any medication.
