Brooklyn Education: Fontbonne inducts new NHS members

Congratulations to the 19 members of the junior class at Fontbonne Hall Academy who were inducted into the Mother St. John Fontbonne Chapter of the National Honor Society on March 31. The honor society recognizes students who excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character as demonstrated by the students’ activities and teacher evaluations.

The induction ceremony was held in the Fontbonne gymnasium, which was filled with teachers, family and friends. Dr. Marie Marrone Moriarty ’81, an optometrist, addressed the group. She encouraged the students to become keen observers in everything that they do. She reminded them to keep their eyes open to the strong academic and spiritual foundation that Fontbonne has given them and to build upon it as they move into the future.

Principal Mary Ann Spicijaric congratulated the new members and also recognized the impressive college scholarships earned by the 40 senior members. To date, they have earned over $16 million in scholarships.

The Girl Scouts from I.S. 228 are providing comfort to others, one blanket at a time. David A. Boody’s Girl Scout Troop 2717, under the direction of Ms. O’Sullivan, learned to crochet through the very generous instruction of Ms. Califiore.

The girls were able to make two blankets, which were donated to the charity Warm Up America, a nonprofit that distributes blankets to hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters and the American Red Cross. With the continued assistance of Ms. Califiore and Ms. O’Sullivan, the girls look forward to creating and donating additional blankets this year.
