Unsung Bay Ridge: Decades of service

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCEOur unsung heroes

My unsung hero for the week is very dear to my heart because I have known her my entire life. Frances Loftus is a loving mother and grandmother who has devoted all of her time to family and community.

She helped improve the community by volunteering at Community Board 10, serving for almost 30 years while never missing a meeting. She was well known for her contributions to each project.

She raised four children while volunteering at St. Patrick’s School and working at the Church Bazaar and Rosary Society. Even now she continues to work with community projects, while devoting her time to 11 grandchildren.

I have witnessed her caring for those around her and feel that I can write a book about how she has helped those in need throughout the years. She is a warm and compassionate person, supported throughout the years by her husband, Joe. Bay Ridge is definitely a better place because of people like Frances Loftus.

UNSUNG FOLK  REMEDIES:  Cabbage

Extensive research has been done on cabbage, and its therapeutic value has been established. In the laboratory, cabbage juice has been proven to kill certain viruses and bacteria. It boosts the immune system to produce more antibodies, while providing high levels of iron and sulphur.

Cabbage has long been used to relieve constipation when used daily as a cole slaw or salad. It is an excellent remedy for stomach ulcers when juiced. It is also said to reduce jaundice, arthritis, gout, eye disorders and heart disease. It helps to purify blood and remove toxins.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or are on any medication.
