Unearthed casket found on Bushwick street

They don’t know where the bones were first buried, but police are looking for the grave robbers who unearthed and dumped a casket on a street near a cemetery in Bushwick Wednesday.

Officers from the 83rd Precinct discovered the damaged coffin and partial skeleton at about 6 a.m. Wednesday morning on Pilling Street near Central Avenue, adjacent to the Cemetery of the Evergreens.

It is not believed, however, that the coffin came from the cemetery, as none of its graves were damaged, according to published reports.

“Nobody knows who dumped a casket with no body in it,” the 83rd Precinct tweeted in a post at 9:07 p.m. Wednesday night. “Investigation is ongoing 2 find the people responsible. Not Cool.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner recovered human hand and foot bones from within the coffin; it is currently working to determine the age and identity. Police estimated the coffin may have been buried about 25 years ago.

Reportedly, the casket was void of any serial numbers that might have helped investigators in their case.
