Actress Elisabeth Moss, famous for her role as Peggy Olsen on the AMC television series “Mad Men” attended the North American premiere of her new movie “Queen of Earth” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on Monday, June 22.

The film, which was directed by Alex Ross Perry, was the centerpiece of the BAMcinemaFest 2015 film festival. This year marks the festival’s seventh year running. It will present the New York premieres of 35 of this year’s most daring and innovative independent films.

“My second film played here four years ago and that was a really big deal for me,” Perry said. “If I wasn’t showing the movie, I’d be here anyway. I’ve lived in the neighborhood since 2007, and it’s just the most fun place to walk and see a film.”

The movie is about two women, Catherine, played by Moss, and her best friend Virginia, played by Katherine Waterston, who grew up together and discover that they have drifted apart when they retreat to a lake house together.

“It seems appropriate to come to the premiere here because we’re hometown proud,” said actress Kate Lyn Sheil.

“Queen of Earth” was shot entirely in Brooklyn, and majority of the film’s cast live locally.

“I might be the only one who doesn’t live in Brooklyn, and that’s because I can’t afford it anymore,” Moss said.

BAMcinemaFest 2015 will play a diverse selection of movies over the next week. The films range from the story of a transgender working girl on the hunt for her cheating partner, to a drama about a family reeling from the death of a newborn son, to a documentary that offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of registered sex offenders living in an isolated community in Florida. The festival will run until Sunday, June 28.
