Building Brooklyn Awards honors big projects in Brooklyn

It was a night built for fun as the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce honored 13 of the borough’s most deserving construction and renovation projects at this year’s Building Brooklyn Awards (BBA) on Tuesday, July 21.

Now in its 15th year, the ceremony honored 13 projects in various categories and took place at the historic Kings Theatre—winner of this year’s historic preservation award.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its membership to the Kings Theatre for the annual Building Brooklyn Awards,” said Matthew Wolf, executive director of the Kings Theatre. “We are honored to participate and play host to the celebration, and we are so grateful for the generous support of the Brooklyn Chamber and the entire community as the Kings made its return to Flatbush Avenue this year.”

Additionally, the chamber honored Andrew Kimball, CEO of Industry City, and Purnima Kapur, executive director of the NYC Department of City Planning, for their career-long contributions to Brooklyn’s real estate and development industries.

“The borough of Brooklyn is truly an innovation hub, where builders and designers can put their craft to use and enhance the city that surrounds them,” said Chamber President and CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “These projects represent the creative influence and inventive culture that inhabit our borough. I would like to congratulate all the winners for their state-of-the-art projects that make this urban setting a place the world needs to see.”

The awards are given to various projects that help to enrich and improve Brooklyn neighborhoods as well as the borough’s overall economy, according to the chamber.

“Over the past year, Brooklyn has seen tremendous, innovative building and development,” said Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “This year’s winners enrich the borough and its residents while exuding their quality Brooklyn-style.”

The chamber announced this year’s winners—chosen by the BBA judging committee—on May 21. According to the chamber, the judging committee is comprised of architects, planners, government officials, economic development experts and business leaders who meet to discuss the nominated projects and select a winner in the spring.

“We are excited to award so many projects that are not only economically viable but also socially and culturally impactful,” said Ofer Cohen, founder and CEO of TerraCRG, a Brooklyn-based commercial real estate firm. “The growth of the Brooklyn Building Awards is a true testament to the transformation taking place in Brooklyn.”
