Canarsie legislator convicted in court

State Senator John Sampson, who represented parts of Canarsie and East New York, was found guilty on Friday, July 24 on six of nine charges, the highest being one count of obstructing justice which carries with it a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail.

Sampson, who previously served as the Democratic leader in the Senate, was charged with trying to cover up his embezzlement of money from escrow accounts, and for lying to the FBI, according to reports.

Sampson, 50, has served in the Senate since 1996, and won re-election in the 19th District in November, 2014 with a landslide 86 percent of the vote.

He will lose his seat in the Legislature as a result of the conviction.
