68th Precinct Police Beat: Perp steals $30,000 in jewelry and cash from elderly woman’s apartment

Between Friday, December 18 and Friday, December 25, the 68th Precinct received reports of two grand larcenies, four burglaries and one robbery. The 68th Precinct serves Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton.

BAH-HUMBUG

Police say a 53-year-old Asian woman was near Sixth Avenue and 78th Street when she placed her purse near the steps of a residence to throw out the trash on Friday, December 25 at 8:45 p.m. While doing so, two unknown perps — described by cops as Hispanics in their early twenties — stole the purse containing approximately $500 before fleeing westbound on 78th Street toward Fifth Avenue.

WINDOW DRESSING

Cops say a 49-year-old Hispanic man returned to his home near Third Avenue and 87th Street on Thursday, December 24 to find three unknown perps in his bedroom. The trio made off with $150 and fled out the bedroom window.

BIKE BUST

An unknown perp broke into a 49-year-old man’s garage/workshop and stole four bikes, including a motocross, totaling approximately $39,000. Cops say the burglary occurred on Thursday, December 24 sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. near Ridge Boulevard and 77th Street. According to police, the perps got into the garage by breaking the front door’s lock.

COWARDLY ROBBERY

A 70-year-old man was near the northwest corner of 67th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway on Wednesday, December 23 around 2:30 a.m. when he was approached from behind by two unknown perps. According to police, the perps grabbed the man’s arms, told him to look forward and hand over his wallet. The victim took the wallet out of his pocket and handed it to the perp behind him, who then removed approximately $450, handed the victim the wallet back and fled the scene.

$30,000 MISTAKE

Police say that, while a 76-year-old woman was away from her apartment near 81st Street and Third Avenue between Friday, December 18 and Tuesday, December 22, an unknown perp broke in the through the rear kitchen window of the second floor and stole approximately $30,000 in jewelry and cash from the victim’s bedroom drawers.

The woman told police she did not lock the kitchen window.

KODAK MOMENT

A 26-year-old male parked his Honda Pilot in a driveway near Fifth Avenue and 79th Street on Tuesday, December 22 from 1:35 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. when, cops say, an unknown perp broke into the vehicle and stole several camera lenses and a laptop, totaling approximately $20,740. There was no sign of forced entry.
