Unsung Bay Ridge: A well-deserved honor

COMMUNITY NEWS

Congratulations to my dear friend, J. Peter Clavin, on being inducted into the Fort Hamilton High School Hall of Fame. It is a special honor to Peter for his contributions to the school. The event will be held on February 13t at the Rex Manor, 11th Avenue and 60th Street. Tickets are $80.00 per person. For reservations, please call 718-745-1445.

I would like to highlight the life-long contributions of Cathie Gearity, past president of the PTA at P.S. 185, and a hard-working member of our community. Cathie is a softball coach at Our Lady of Angels Church. She founded the annual Semper-Fi Run that benefits wounded Marines and their families. She is also a full-time registered nurse at the Calvary Hospice at Lutheran Medical Center and donates much time to supporting the families of the sick.

Cathy is able to do all this and more because she is supported by her wonderful husband, Raymond, her children and grandchildren. She has endless energy, and shares it generously with all who know her.

TRIVIA CORNER….…..

•Five years after being involved in the condemning to death of 19 persons in the 1692 witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts, one of the judges, Samuel Sewall, said that the convictions were a mistake and he accepted “blame and shame” for them. For the rest of his life, he spent one day a year in fasting and prayer, repenting his role in the trial.

•In 1555, Ivan The Terrible ordered the construction of St. Basil’s Church in Moscow. He was so pleased with the work that he had the two architects blinded to prevent them from ever constructing anything else that would surpass its beauty.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES:

Aloe Vera for Receding Gums: Aloe Vera is anti-inflammatory and also helps to rejuvenate cells within the body. It is a popular folk remedy for helping to rebuild receding gum tissue. You can use aloe vera for brushing your teeth and as a mouthwash. Every morning and evening, after brushing and flossing your teeth, put some aloe vera gel on a soft toothbrush and brush your teeth and gums once again. Let it stay on your teeth for three to five minutes. Finally, rinse your mouth with water.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or are on any medication.
