Industry City to bring “Cinema Club for Kids” to Sunset Park

Over the next couple of months, Sunset Park parents will have a place for their children not only to watch popular family flicks for free, but also participate in activities relating to the movie being screened.

Starting Saturday, February 6, Industry City and Rooftop Films will present the inaugural “Sunset Park Cinema Club for Kids” program. Both the viewings and the activities, which take place on Saturdays, will be free to all attendees.

Chief of Staff and Director of Community Engagement at Industry City Cristal Rivera explains that the massive commercial/industrial space isn’t all about business.

“While increasingly a place where local residents work, Industry City also offers the community a range of recreational activities on the weekends through its events programming,” she said, adding that events such as these give Sunset families an opportunity to have something constructive and fun to do during the cold winter season. “With weather typically at its worst in the heart of winter and early spring, outdoor recreation can be somewhat limited over these next few months.”

At each event, a local business will present an activity for the children that matches that day’s movie. During the first event, Saturday, February 6, Disney Pixar’s latest hit “Inside Out” will be screened. Prior to the viewing, children will have the opportunity to learn how a real brain works and make their own glowing memory ball with Sunset Spark, a local organization that offers free, high-quality classes for kids, adults and families on a wide variety of science subjects.

On February 20, “The Book of Life” will be shown after the Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl host a kids’ performance and puppet show, while Saturday, February 27 will have kids partake in a dance workshop with Brooklyn Salsa followed by a screening of “Up.”

The series continues on Saturday, March 5 as BRIC will host an arts and crafts workshop for the youngsters before they watch “Shaun the Sheep.” The series concludes on Saturday, March 26 as Sunset Spark’s Build a Robot and Sumo Robot Exhibition will be on display followed by a screening of “Iron Giant.”

Rivera adds that she is happy that local businesses will participate in the series, helping the smaller Sunset organizations. “Bolstered by the amazing, family-friendly offerings of our local partners, including Sunset Spark, Brooklyn Salsa, Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl and BRIC, the Sunset Park Cinema Club for Kids is a great option for the many families in the neighborhood looking for free fun on the weekends, especially when the weather outside is less than ideal,” she said.

The events will be held at the Industry City Factory Floor, 241 37th Street. Doors will open at 10 a.m. with workshops or exhibitions beginning at 10:30 a.m., The films will be shown at 11:45 a.m. For more information, visit www.industrycity.com.
