Unsung Bay Ridge: A community treasure

This week I have decided to turn the spotlight on someone who is well known for her community service to Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst. Dorothy Garuccio has worked as a liaison person between many government agencies and the people of our community to help resolve quality-of-life issues. I first met her when she was a staff member for Councilmember Vincent Gentile.

Dorothy is very active in St. Finbar’s Parish, assisting seniors and neighbors while also working at Community Board 10, to help solve matters that affect the entire community. She is able to do as much as she does due to the support given to her by her husband, Anthony, and sons, Dominick and Anthony. We are fortunate to have Dorothy as a neighbor.

Happy Birthday to a true Bay Ridge icon, Mike Long, chairperson of the New York State Conservative Party and vice president of the Fifth Avenue B.I.D. I join his loving wife Eileen, and his children and grandchildren in wishing him many more happy and healthy ones.

TRIVIA CORNER….….. regarding movies

In the early days of silent film, unscrupulous film companies would steal film print, reshoot a few scenes and release the result as a new production. To combat this, the Biograph company put the initial AB, which is the company’s trademark, in every scene.

The first motion picture copyrighted in the United States, was in 1894. It showed a man in the act of sneezing.

Mary Pickford’s success came from playing the roles of young girls and boys. She was five feet tall, but her small stature was deliberately exaggerated in film. All furniture and props were staged one third larger than life-size. Doors and windows exceeded normal size and doorknobs were placed higher.

Throughout her long career, Sarah Bernhardt never trusted banks, and insisted she be paid in gold coins which she kept in a chamois bag. From this bag, she paid her staff. When the bag became too heavy, she transferred the coins to a trunk under her bed..

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES:

Toe Nail Fungus: Apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil placed on a cotton bud and taped on the nail twice per day is said to help in growing a healthy new nail.

High Blood Pressure: Use sesame seed oil only for cooking (instead of other vegetable oils). It is said that blood pressure readings begin to descend when this is done.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or are on any medication.
