Michael Londra’s “Celtic Fire” coming to Kingsborough

An award-winning Irish singer is bringing the fire to Brooklyn just in time for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

On Stage at Kingsborough, known for bringing high quality and worldwide talent to southern Brooklyn, is at it again as Michael Londra brings his show “Celtic Fire” to the neighborhood. The show will include Irish music and dance performed by Londra and world class musicians and dancers.

Londra was the lead singer in “Riverdance” during a U.S. national tour. He performed at both Radio City Music Hall and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Anna Becker, executive director for On Stage at Kingsborough, is thrilled to have the two-time Emmy-nominated performer at the venue.

“We are thrilled he’s coming here to Kingsborough with a full-scale show,” she said of Londra, who received his nominations for “Beyond Celtic,” his PBS television special. “He’s one of the most outstanding performers in the field. He tours the world with the show. For us to score this event and talent, we are very excited about it.”

The performance will be a unique one as it will feature several forms of entertainment. “It is a celebration of music and song. Londra is the main event and will be backed up by wonderful traditional Irish musicians and punctuated by world champion dancers,” Becker said. “I’m thrilled how he’s put together so many elements of Irish entertainment. It will be high energy.”

The feeling of excitement is mutual as artists are enthusiastic about performing at the venue.

“I’ve noticed that lots of artists are excited to be here,” Becker said. “They know they are reaching a part of the city that doesn’t have as many outlets for the performing arts. I heard from other artists what a diverse audience we have so they’re excited about that and where they are.”

As the date nears, audience reception has been overwhelmingly positive, noted Becker. “There has certainly been a lot of enthusiasm a few weeks out. Ticket sales have been really brisk,” she said.

For On Stage, it is important that despite the high quality of talent, prices remain affordable for the community. “Seeing Broadway stars and performers from all over the world, it’s important to keep prices accessible so that anyone who wants to come can do so,” she said.

Becker expects the audience to be enthusiastic. “There will be a mix. A part of the older audience always appreciates traditional music, but families also try to pass the love of music to their children,” she said. “There will be a wide variety of people outside of the Irish-American community that loves music and dance. It’s universally enjoyed.”

Fans will also be able to meet Londra after the show for an autograph session. “We try to find a way to make our events more personal than just seeing a show and leaving, so they can have a direct experience with the artist,” Becker said. “And it happens to be on the Saturday after St. Patrick’s Day. So we are not only celebrating great music but the holiday as well.”

“Celtic Fire” will be performed on Saturday, March 19 at 8 p.m. at the Leon M. Goldstein Performing Arts Center on the campus of Kingsborough Community College, 2001 Oriental Boulevard. Tickets are $35. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.onstageatkingsborough.org.
