Woman sexually assaulted in lobby of Sunset Park apartment

Cops are looking to identify the man they say sexually assaulted a 29-year-old woman in the lobby of her Sunset Park apartment Saturday night.

According to police, at about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, the suspect — described by authorities as a light-skinned male — approached the woman in the lobby of her 50th Street apartment and placed a knife to her neck. Cops say the man then removed the victim’s clothes, sexually assaulted her and fled.

Emergency medical services responded to the apartment — located between Eighth and Ninth Avenues — and transported the woman to a local hospital where she was later released in stable condition.

The suspect is further described as being 5’9″ to 5’10” in height with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

“We are shaken by the news of a brutal sexual assault of a young woman committed in Sunset Park just before midnight last night,” said Congressmembers Nydia Velázquez and Carlos Menchaca in a joint statement Sunday morning. “We urge community members to report any suspicious activity and any information that may be helpful for police to locate the suspect. We also hope that this terrible crime presents an opportunity for our community members to continue to work together to build a safer, more harmonious environment where individuals of all backgrounds live together side by side, looking out for one another.

“This crime and others that threaten the integrity of our community will not go unpunished,” they continued. “We demand justice for the survivor and her family.”
