Purim celebrated at Sheepshead Nursing and Rehab Center

Commemorating the ancient holiday of Purim, the Sheepshead Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (2840 Knapp Street) celebrated in style on Thursday, March 24.

With a customary reading of the Megillah – a firsthand account of the events of Purim, also known as the Book of Esther – followed by a party, the center’s long and short term residents, along with their family members, enjoyed a day of festive fun.

“We had a huge turnout and we had residents and a lot of family members come as well,” said Christine Gorman, director of therapeutic recreation at the center. “We did a lot of arts and crafts leading up to the event – we made crowns and some longtime residents made masks.”

Purim is among the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar and has been celebrated for 2,500 years.  The holiday reflects on the story of the Jewish people and their triumph over a plot aimed at destroying them entirely.

The rehabilitation center had a local rabbi read the Megillah, and saw dancing and masks and crowns, keeping with the festive theme of the holiday.

“We had a great entertainer who was able to get the room excited and got our family members dancing,” added Gorman. “They were so overjoyed. It was a wonderful event and a wonderful turnout.”
