Art to take over Coney Island with return of Coney Art Walls

Bringing culture to Coney.

The 2016 Coney Art Wall lineup has been released. What can art buffs expect? Some new artists, and some old ones, plus some great eats along Coney Island’s Greenwood Beach this summer.

“The outdoor museum of street art” as some have come to know it, is curated by CEO of Thor Equities Joseph Sitt, the developer behind the project, and Jeffrey Deitch, a leading art adviser and former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

The pair is excited to welcome some new artists to the beachfront venue this year, including Nina Chanel Abney, John Ahearn, Timothy Curtis, D*Face, Jessica Diamond, Tristan Eaton, Eric Haze, Icy & Sot, London Police, Nychos, Pose, Stephen Powers, Tats Cr, and Samantha Vernon.  Some returning artists that will be creating new works this year are Lady Aiko, Mister Cartoon, Crash, Daze, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh and Marie Roberts.

“There will be 20 new murals this year,” said Deitch. “We have expanded the program to include several of the leading painters and sculptors in New York, in addition to leading artists connected with street culture. Coney Art Walls will be one of the best places in New York to see ambitious new painting.”

In addition to new artists, the Stillwell Avenue site will feature several popular food vendors including Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Calexico and Table 87.

“Coney Island is continuing to create new excitement and attract visitors from around the world, and we are excited to be part of the neighborhood’s ongoing resurgence,” said Sitt.

Coney Art Walls, 3050 Stillwell Avenue, will be returning for the 2016 season on May 28. For more information, visit coneyartwalls.com.
