Generally Speaking: Gearing up for the Senior Sidewalk Social

The Bay Ridge Center for Older Adults, the Merchants of Third Avenue and Community Board 10 are holding the Bay Ridge Senior Sidewalk Social on Tuesday, May 17 from 2 to 7 p.m., along Third Avenue from 83rd to 92nd Street. While themed towards the elder citizens of the area, the event is open to all segments of the public. Attorney Judie Grimaldi is the project coordinator and Todd Fliedner of the Bay Ridge Center is the co-coordinator. Another rocking successful annual fundraiser on behalf of the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade was held by Frankie Marra at the Salty Dog Bar and Restaurant, 7905 Third Avenue. The bar was decked out in red, white and blue while photos of past parades, military defenders and veterans flashed across video monitors, all while five bands pumped out rock and roll and Irish favorites. The raffle for 16 $100 gift certificates for 16 bar/restaurants was won by Soccer Tavern owner Brendan Farley.

The United Military Veterans of Kings County, sponsors of the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade, will be holding its last general meeting before the May 30 parade at the Fort Hamilton Post Chapel at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17. If your organized group or band wants to march in this year’s borough-wide 149th Kings County Memorial Day Parade, it’s important to send a representative to this meeting. Prolific author Peter Scarpa, a former president of the Bay Ridge Historical Society, is out with a new, self-published book titled, Every Returning Spring. The tome includes poems he wrote and his reflections on life.

Richard Danford, New York State director of the Ombudsman Long Term Care Program, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Bay Ridge AARP, on Tuesday, May 10, at 2:30 p.m., at the Shore Hill Neighborhood Center, 91st Street, between Shore Road and Colonial Road. The meeting is open to the general public.
