Love the old, embrace the new this year at Coney

Celebrate the old, and welcome in the new.

Coney Island is well known for its traditions and permanent fixtures that make the waterfront amusement area special. Events such as the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and the Mermaid Parade, and famous rides such as the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel are just a few favorites that keep regulars coming back.

However, there are tons of new additions coming this summer at Coney that are sure to excite attendees, young and old.

On the rides front, Luna Park is set to unveil Endeavor, its newest space-themed, high-thrill ride.

The ride features open air, suspended passenger vehicles that give riders the sensation of flying 60 feet through the air at 25 miles per hour and rotating at 90 degrees’ parallel to the ground.

“We couldn’t be more excited to kick-off the summer by offering an out-of-this-galaxy experience with Endeavor,” said Valerio Ferrari, president of Central Amusement International and Zamperla USA.

The ride will make its debut Memorial Day Weekend.

Those that are fans of the arts will be in for a treat. Coney Art Walls from Thor Equities makes its return this Memorial Day weekend with 21 brand new murals.

The outdoor museum of street art is curated by CEO of Thor Equities Joseph Sitt and a leading art advisor and former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Jeffrey Deitch.

“Coney Island is continuing to create new excitement and attract visitors from around the world, and we are excited to be part of the neighborhood’s ongoing resurgence,” said Sitt.

“We have expanded the program to include several of the leading painters and sculptures in New York, in addition to leading artists connected with street culture. Coney Art Walls will be one of the best places in New York to see ambitious new painting,” added Deitch.

Located at 3050 Stillwell Avenue in Coney Island, the public art wall project includes food purveyor Greenwood Beach featuring popular food vendors such as  Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Calexico and Table 87.

Fans of last year’s events can enjoy some of the program’s returning artists, as well as several new talents.

The painting of new murals is currently taking place. All murals will be completed in time for the Mermaid Parade on June 18.  In addition, three walls will be painted by children and young adults from the local community this summer.

Coney Art Walls is bordered by the Bowery, West 15th Street and Stillwell Avenue near the Coney Island Boardwalk and beach. It makes its debut on Friday, May 27, and will remain open daily from 12 to 10 p.m. through October.

Brooklynites looking to take in a high quality concert or show now have Coney Island as an option with the opening of the Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk. This season, the 5,000-seat open-air venue will features concerts by Don Henley, Bryan Adams, the Beach Boys, Boston and more.

“From its very first performance this summer, the Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk will be a must-visit destination for fun-seekers in search of top-flight entertainment from near and far,” said Borough President Eric Adams.
